In the Wahgi valley W.R. Carpenter Estates own and operate
four Tea Plantations, each with it's own factory. These properties were
developed from phragmites swamp country in the mid 1960's. Almost all the
equipment used, was air freighted into the valley, as these were the days
before the road system in the Highlands was fully developed. The Tea
produced is of the best quality in the region and compares favourably with
tea of India, Indonesia or African origin.
Carpenter's tea factories manufacture tea of the CTC (or Cut, Tear and
Curl) process, a totally 'Natural' type of manufacture. This tea is highly
suitable for tea bags, which are popular particularly in developed
countries.
The
tender leaves and buds are harvested from fields either by hand or machine
and initially withered in large withering troughs utilizing, hot air or
ambient air to reduce the surface and internal moisture content, inducing
a change in the leaf chemistry.
The
withered leaf is then fed through machines known as Rotovanes to prepare
the leaf for the CTC process. The Quadruplex CTC machines macerates the
rolled leaf by cutting, tearing and curling to bring out the inherent
enzymes and promote the next process which is fermentation.
The
familiar black tea, which emerges from the dryer is passed through a
series of screens and meshes and graded into various sizes. The graded tea
is then packed into paper sacks, which have replaced the traditional tea
chest and invoiced for export or value addition.
The
entire tea manufacturing process is mechanized and fully automated.
Therefore the hygienic standards are high. Furthermore there are no
chemical pesticides used by the company in their husbandry of tea growing,
another
environmentally friendly feature.
A
major portion of the Carpenter's production is exported to Europe,
Australia and USA with small quantities being shipped to the Middle East,
Africa and Sri Lanka.
Around 10 percent of the tea manufactured by Carpenter's is packed in
'Value added' form. The Packing and the Tea bagging operation is carried
out on the estates with sophisticated machinery and skilled operators.
The
rich soil and ideal climate conditions of the Wahgi valley contribute to
the success of these tea plantations, that are rapidly promoting Papua New
Guinea's reputation as a leading producer or quality tea to meet a growing
demand
throughout the world.
Fermentation
or oxidization takes place for about 80 minutes, during which the
processed tea turns, from a bright green pigmentation to a coppery brown
colour, Once fermentation is complete, a carefully judged moment in time,
the leaf is fed in to fluidized bed dryers. The dryer's are fuelled by
Naphta, which is a by-product of the natural gas industry, situated to the
West of the Wahgi Valley. Naphta is one of the cleanest burning fuels
available, so this ensures that there are no noxious vapours absorbed by
the tea during the direct - fire drying process. The availability of
Naphta enables the company to be at the forefront of using alternative
fuel supplies to stem the rapidly diminishing timber resources. |
